Shelby Calvillo interned at Tu Nidito, which Molly Mahoney also discussed in Episode 3. Shelby talks about what she learned about interviewing and networking in her internship, as well as her current job for the Pima County Health Department in helping stop the spread of disease, such as the food-borne outbreaks happening at Chipotle or through the transmission of West Nile virus from mosquitoes. And we also talk more about a love we both share: public health!
Shelby Calvillo is a May 2015 graduate of the University of Arizona’s College of Public Health, with a bachelor’s degree in public health. While pursuing her degree, she worked in the U of A’s PEST Lab, which stands for Predicting Epidemics in Space and Time, where her research centered around disease carried by mosquitos. She is now pursuing her master’s degree at the U of A College of Public Health in the Epidemiology track. She is also working as an Environmental Health Specialist at the Pima County Health Department in the Division of Consumer Health and Food Safety. In her free time, she likes to trap mosquitoes in her back yard and play with her puppy!
Take advantage of opportunities, even if they aren’t exactly what you think are what you want. Her job in environmental health is not the same area as her studies in epidemiology, but she loves it.
Get more involved on campus so you can network and build more relationships. Make the time.
